PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- People here in Maine donated generously to the nation's largest single-day food drive.

It was the 21st annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Letter carriers collected non-perishable food items left on doorsteps across the country Saturday to benefit Feeding America. There are about 50 million people struggling with food insecurity in this country, including 17 million children. Last year, letter carriers collected more than 70 million pounds of food from across the country, including 250 thousand pounds from homes along delivery routes here in Maine. Coordinator Terry Powers says letter carriers started the food drive because they see the need in their communities each day.

"We see these people every day and you know if every person gives just one can, I mean some of our guys have 500 customers out on their routes," Powers said. "If everybody gives just one can, that's 500 cans of food to help our neighbors."

If you would still like to donate, letter carriers will be continue collecting non-perishable food items along their delivery routes and at post offices through next week.
