PORTSMOUTH, NH (NEWS CENTER) -- More than 1200 people ran to honor Greenland, New Hampshire police chief Michael Maloney today.

It has been a little more than a year since Maloney was shot and killed in the line of duty. On April 12, 2012 law enforcement from several towns executed a search warrant on a Greenland home. Four other officers were shot and wounded during the ensuing standoff.

A few days later, members of the Portsmouth Police Department decided to run from their station to the Greenland police station to honor the fallen chief. Word got out, and two thousand people showed up to run. Now the Chief Maloney Unity Run has become an annual event that brings police together with the community.

it reminds us that they haven't forgotten what happened, that we are supported, that we are all together as a community, it's not just separated you know police and citizens. We're all working together and supporting each other and that's the way Chief Maloney would want it, so it's really uplifting.

Proceeds from the run will benefit the Chief Michael Maloney Memorial Fund, which supports the families of New England first responders who have been injured or killed in the line of duty.
