AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The Legislature's Education Committee has rejected a proposal that would have diverted $1 million in public school funding to establish a legal defense fund for the Maine Charter School Commission.

In a 10-2 vote Monday, the committee shot down the proposal, which would have provided legal funding for the Department of Education and the state Board of Education as well as the charter school board.

The LePage administration billed the proposal as a contingency in case Attorney General Janet Mills wouldn't defend the Charter School Commission against a legal challenge of a decision to approve or deny a charter school application.

Committee Chairman Bruce MaDonald said education funds should be going to schools, not to lawyers.
