Man charged in fire at Maine town's garage

BINGHAM, Maine (AP) - A Bingham, Maine, man is facing an arson charge in connection with a fire that burned down the town's public works garage last weekend.

The fire caused $500,000 in damage.

The State Fire Marshal's Office arrested 29-year-old Brandon Sherwood at his home Thursday. Sherwood is being held in Somerset County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Investigators say they became suspicious of Sherwood when he was seen near the garage looking for his dog after firefighters arrived. Investigators later found Sherwood's dead dog in the rubble of the building. The dog apparently was in the building when a flammable liquid was used to start the fire, and was animal was trapped inside.

Sherwood's also a suspect in a fire that night at an ice cream stand in town.
