BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Today is the seven year anniversary of the first tweet ever sent. Since then, Twitter has grown into a social media power house, with over two hundred million active members in countries all over the world.
NEWS CENTER's social media correspondent, Brett Whitmarsh, says that in the past seven years, Twitter has had a great impact on the way we communicate news to one another.
"As soon as something happens, it is immediately pushed out to Twitter, and millions if not billions of people are seeing it around the world," he said. "And that information, how quickly it's put on Twitter, can travel around the world very quickly."
Twitter also has an impact on our day to day lives in Bangor. Tanya Pereira, Business Development Specialist at Bangor City Hall, says she interacts with community members everyday on Twitter, and the information she takes in helps shape the way city hall operates.
"If I see a lot of people asking the same questions, it's a opportunity for me to bring that back to city hall and say, a lot of people are asking about, for example, updates on the cross insurance center," she said.
Interested as to what the first tweet ever said? It was sent by Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey, and it said, "just setting up my twttr".
