PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The owners of three Mexican restaurants in Maine have been convicted of hiring illegal immigrants.

Brothers Guillermo Fuentes of Westbrook and Hector Fuentes of Waterville were found guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Portland of charges including harboring undocumented aliens for profit and aiding and abetting document fraud.

Prosecutors say the brothers employed the immigrants at their restaurants in Westbrook, Waterville and Biddeford. The legal immigrant brothers also helped the workers get fraudulent documents, including Social Security cards and green cards.

A lawyer for the Fuentes brothers said prosecution witnesses had motive to lie so they could stay in the U.S.

The brothers face 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count at sentencing at a future date.
