PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Eli Cayer is a man with a vision. He's transforming a garage that was home to a taxi company for 10 years into a space where Maine producers can expand in an affordable way.
Cayer is the President and Owner of Urban Farm Fermentory, an experimental fermentation center in Portland. As a local business owner, he knows first hand how hard it can be for Maine vendors to connect with potential buyers. So he changed the first bay at 200 Anderson Street into what he hopes will be a place for small business owners to come in, use, and sell their products. Businesses like Bomb Diggity Bakery are already settling into their new home, recently named BayONE at UFF, nicely. Cayer hopes to add onto his own business here, too.
"Everyone's been very involved. Friends and people have come out to help," Lindsay Decspikes, Program Director at Bomb Diggity, said. "Local Sprouts came down to help with the space with all the renovations."
"We'll come in from the side parking lot. Everyone will get to walk through this area - smell the smells, see the sights, go up into our tasting room if that's what they're there for, experience what we produce, then enjoy their day," Cayer said.
BayONE UFF is holding a fundraising event called "A Brush with Love" to raise money so he can continue building this space. It takes place on Saturday, February 16 at 5 p.m. at Urban Farm Fermentory.
