BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A Carmel man made his first court appearance on Tuesday at the Penobscot County Judicial Center, after being accused of assaulting an 16-month-old child.
The charges come after police responded to a call that a man was beating a child in a vehicle parked in the St. Joseph's Hospital parking lot Friday afternoon. Responding officers discovered 30-year-old Scott Peavey sitting in a parked truck along with a female passenger and her 16-month-old daughter. Both Peavey and the female passenger were smoking cigarettes and were also intoxicated.
The witness who said they saw the beating described seeing a man give 6 or 7 quick blows to the child according to Superior Court Justice William Henderson. Justice Henderson also said that police records from Eastern Maine Medical Center state that the child suffered a black eye, black and blue ear, and fat fat lip.
Court documents state that during Peavey's arrest he told police that he didn't remember if he hit the child or not because he gets "blackout drunk".
Justice Henderson set bail at $3,000 cash or $15,000 surety. Peavey is currently being held at Penobscot County Jail.
