ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- It used to be residents of Ellsworth and other Downeast communities would have to travel to Bangor for cancer treatment. After nearly a year of construction, the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital unveiled its new Mary Dow Center for Cancer Care.
CEO Charlie Therrien with Maine Coast Memorial Hospital said, "We have a reputation of a fantastic staff our nursing and support staff here. We have great relationships with our patients and now we feel we have a facility that kind of matches the people side of it. So we are very proud of it. "
The Mary Dow Center for Cancer Care offers patients a state of the art facility close to home. Patients have their own private entrance to the cancer center. Once inside there are brand new infusion bays that offer a patient privacy or a communal experience. The hospital also added a new pharmacy on site.
The new addition is named in memory of a longtime nurse at the hospital, that battled cancer herself and did not have the center close to home to get treatment.
Mary Dow's son, Jeff Dow, was present at the ceremony and said, "It memorializes her life ambitions and primarily it focuses on the quality of care we can offer here and the services we can offer here for our patients. That would be the one thing my mother would be very proud of."
The renovations cost 3.4 million dollars. The community raised 800-thousand dollars for the project.
