FREEDOM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- State Police say a well-known Belfast businesswoman was killed when she lost control of the truck she was driving on an ice covered road in Freedom Saturday morning.

Police say 64-year-old Ruth Holmes was driving on Route 137 in Freedom when her pickup truck slid off the road just after 7 a.m. The truck flipped on its side and slid into a tree, crushing the roof. Police say Holmes was found dead at the scene.

Officials say Holmes and her 11-year-old granddaughter, who was also in the car at the time, were both wearing their seat belts. Holmes' granddaughter Cassie Jackson escaped the crash with minor injuries, and she was treated at a Belfast hospital for bumps and bruises.

State Police say Holmes and her family have operated Holmes Greenhouse and Florist Shop in Belfast for many years.  Her husband Allen retired last month after serving as the Belfast High School field hockey coach for 40 years, and he is also a retired physical education teacher at Belfast Middle School.
