PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree has been appointed to the House Appropriations Committee.
The Maine Democrat said it's a great opportunity to have a significant impact on how money is spent on programs that affect Maine, like shipbuilding or agriculture.
Any bill that allows the federal government to spend money must go through the Appropriations Committee.
The committee is divided into subcommittees. Pingree plans to request to be placed on the Defense and Agriculture Subcommittees since shipbuilding and farming are important in Maine.
She said Thursday that she will ask Congressional leaders for a waiver to allow her to continue to serve on the House Armed Services and Agriculture committees.
Pingree is the second House Member from Maine since 1899 to serve on the committee.
