SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A couple of accidents caused some headaches for morning commuters on Thursday morning. Black ice was apparently to blame for one accident and a blown out tire for the other.
At around 8:30 this morning, several cars collided near the middle of Casco Bay Bridge, blocking both lanes heading into Portland. Vehicles immediately behind the accident then had to systematically get off the bridge in reverse. This caused a massive traffic tie-up in South Portland.
Meanwhile, at the same time, state police had their own accident to deal with on the northbound side of I-295 at Tukey's bridge. The road had to be shut down on the northbound side because of an accident they suspect was caused by a blown out tire on one of the vehicles. There were no serious injuries. The highway was re-opened to traffic later in the morning.
