AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine House Republicans have elected Rep. Kenneth Fredette of Newport to be the House Minority Leader for the next two years.

Fredette, who is serving his second term in the House, said he will work to put young Republicans and women in leadership roles in the caucus, and emphasize bipartisaship.

"I think that [bipartisanship] is critical," said Fredette. "We have work to do. We have people out there that are hurting, and we need to be thinking about them first."

Fredette represents District 25, which includes Corinna, Corinth, Exeter, Newport, and Plymouth.

Challenging Fredette were former House Speaker Rep. Robert Nutting of Oakland, and Rep. Paul Davis of Sangerville.

Fredette won in the second balloting.
