BAR HARBOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Officials at Mount Desert Island Hospital celebrated a major advancement Tuesday in their hospital's ability to meet the heathcare needs of area women.
After years of work, the hospital will now be getting a new women's health center. The current center, which sits right next to the hospital, has been open since 1993. Directors say it currently serves up to 2,000 women a year by providing them with gynecological and contraceptive services.
Hospital directors say a major problem with the center is it isn't big enough. Supporters raised $1.3 million to help build the new health center. A large donation came from the Stewart family. TV producer Dick Wolf, who owns a home in Seal Harbor, also contributed a large amount. His wife Noelle sits on the hospital's board of trustees.
"Healthcare is a major priority for me because I've got five kids as well as a wife and myself," Wolf said following a press conference outside of the hospital on Tuesday, "and you realize without good healthcare you're living 50 years in the past."
"We have the support of the summer community," remarked Jane Tawney, who is a physician's assistant at the health center, "we have the support of our patients...we have the support of all people on the island and beyond, and I am so grateful and so overwhelmed by that."
Hospital directors plan to build the new women's health center on the corner of Main and Oliver Streets in Bar Harbor. They are hoping to have it open by the fall of next year.
