KITTERY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- At the request of the Maine State Police, speed limits on the turnpike from Exit 63 in Gray to Exit 109 in West Gardiner have been reduced to 45mph due to freezing rain.

Interstate 95 in Portsmouth was closed in both directions because of the icy conditions. Several tractor trailers jackknifed and became stuck on the Piscataqua Bridge between Portsmouth and Kittery.

State Police say the freezing rain has iced over highways in southern Maine, causing dozens of cars and trucks to slide off highways and roads.

A state police dispatcher reported 20 to 30 vehicles off the Maine Turnpike on a 20-mile stretch between Wells and Kittery in York County.
