NEWRY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Skiers and snowboarders anxious to hit the slopes don't have to wait any longer.
Sunday River opened its first trail on Friday afternoon, and opened a second trail on Sunday. It's the fourth year in a row the Western Maine resort has been the first on the east coast to open for the season. It took nineteen hours of straight snowmaking with more than seventy snow guns to make enough snow to ski on. Sunday River spokesperson Darcy Morse says there's a lot of pressure to live up to the early opening reputation the mountain has earned over the years.
"I think it's more about opening as early as we can," Morse told NEWS CENTER. "It's never really a race against the other resorts as much as a race to open for our season pass holders, for our guests that have come to expect an early opening."
The mountain will continue to open only on the weekends until conditions make it possible to open during the week.
