PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Maine Department of Transportation and Portland city officials have narrowed down three options for redeveloping the area around Franklin Arterial, but there's still a long road ahead.
They presented the options to the public Wednesday night.
All three include sidewalks and bike lanes that would connect Back Cove to the waterfront.
Franklin Arterial runs from I-295 to Commerical Street. Right now, there are no sidewalks or bike paths, and traffic tends to back up in that area.
Each of the 3 plans would work to divert traffic onto other streets and make the area safer for foot travel.
The preliminary study is expected to take up to 18 months. That includes surveying traffic patterns in the area-- and projecting economic growth.
