Mount Vernon, Maine (NEWSCENTER)--George Smith, one of Maine's most powerful outdoor advocates, will leave his position as Executive Director of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine (SAM) by the end of the year.

Smith has served as the organization's Executive Director for more than seventeen years.

Smith is a well known and powerful advocate for hunters and fishemen in Maine. He has led a number of outdoor initiatives in Maine.  He is generally considred the creator of Maine's Outdoor Heritage Fund.  "That's my one idea," he told News Center "and I had an awful lot of help."  He also led SAM on many issues, such as the bear hunt referendum, expanded moose seasons and longer hunting days and seasons.

Smith will continue as the co-host of a popular TV show and as a coumnist for the Maine Sportsman magazine.  He also is very active in political consulting.  His endorsement, support and expertise is sought out by many of Maine's prominent politicians.  Smith believes that his work and the support of sportsmen in the 1994 gubernatorial election enabled Angus King to be elected.

A new Executive Director is expected to be on board by the end of the year.  Smith did not rule out that he might remain with SAM in some lesser or consulting capacity.
