The building on India Street on the eastern edge of the downtown area has been vacant for several years, and was in the process of being demolished to make way for a new hotel/condo development. Greg Kirsch of Opechee Construction says while the massive fire sped up the demolition process, it should not affect the future of the project. Kirsch says he expects construction to begin on the site by the end of the month.
More than 100 firefighters battled the three-alarm fire as scores of people gathered to watch Thursday afternoon. Thick black smoke filled the sky in the neighborhood. Crews battled flareups throughout the night.
No injuries have been reported.
