Fit at Five: Girls on the Run

The growing pains that go along with being a kid can be tough. Young girls about to enter their teenage years are faced with body image issues that often take a toll on their self confidence. On this Fit at Five we take a look at a program that works with kids right before they enter those challenging years. It teaches them how they can find confidence through staying active.

The Girls on the Run program has been around since the 90s. Now the program has officially come to Maine! The goal is to inspire girls to be happy, healthy, and confident. This 10 week after school program focuses on 3rd through 5th grade girls. What it does is prepare them for their teenage years through a curriculum and of course running. Coach Linda Raymond tells us that the magic really happens when the girls get outdoors and start moving. They start smiling more, talking, and most importantly opening up.

Girls on the Run will be holding their first 5K on October 21st in Deering Oaks Park in Portland. Money raised on the Hot Choco Trot will go towards the program and scholarships. We have provided a link for more information on Girls on the Run and to sign up for their 5K.
