PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- Asking voters to "help forever take the gavel from Nancy Pelosi's long reaching liberal hand", conservative Republican Dean Scontras today officially announced he's running for Maine's 1st District Congressional seat.
Democrat Chellie Pingree is in her first term in the seat and is running for re-election.
Hoping to cash in on momentum from fellow Conservative Paul Lepage's win last week in the gubernatorial primary ... Dean Scontras appealed to parents in particular to help elect him and help bring down the national debt.
"We are expected to have annual deficits of 1.5 trillion dollars for the next 10 years," Scontras told a gathering a suppoerters. "Each household - are you ready for this - now owes more than 400,000 per household."
Scontras made his announcement standing near what he calls "the debt truck" ... his campaign vehicle that shows a scowling Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the house, next to the words: Stop This Woman. It is topped by a counter tallying the national debt.
At an event in Orono today, Chellie Pingree had not heard Scontras's specific criticisms, but had this response to his announcement. "I see it as my job to make sure I'm working hard attempting to work hard on some of the issues around a difficult economy and I won't take anything for granted.
She went on to say,"We still face tremendous problems in this country whether its not having enough jobs continuing to grow our economy making sure everbody has access to healthcare and the issue we're here to talk about today renewable energy and making sure we get off our dependence on foreign oil."
Scontras made an unsuccessful bid for the seat in 2008. He lost to Charlie Summers in the primary.
