Green Outdoors: Mainers compete at Nationals

RUMFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Jessie Diggins of the U. S. Ski Team put on the greatest show at the National Cross Country Ski Championships in Rumford. More than a dozen Mainers turned in respectable perfromance on the national stage.

Among Mainers who did well were Lucy Garrec of Freeport and Colby who now skis at the University of Vermont.  Garrec had a tenth place finish in the 20K and a fifteenth place finish in the 10K.

Clare Egan of Cape Elizabeth, Wellesley and UNH now skis for the Craftsbury Green Project.  This is a group attempting to develop international level racers and spread information about the environment. Egan had an eleventh place finish in the 10K and a seventeenth place finish in the 20K.

Welly Ramsey of New Sharon and the University of Maine at Presque Isle had a fourteenth place finish in the 30K. Ramsey is just nineteen years old.

Nils Koons who graduated from Messalonskee High School and Darmouth College finished sixteenth in the 15K and twenty-first in the 30K. Koons is able to compete internationally for New Zealand as his father is from that nation.  The family moved to Maine when Nils was in Junior High School.

The event was staged by the Chisholm Ski Club despite a snow drought in New England.
