WISCASSET, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A Wiscasset pilot who volunteers with youth programs has been chosen a Hometown Hero by the U. S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Nick Knobil is like a schoolboy himself because he will get a ride in an F-16.

"I just can't believe it," said Knobil who volunteers with the Young Eagles and ACE Camp programs.  The Young Eagles program attempts to get high schoolers excited about math and science through aviation. ACE Camp stands for Aviation Career Education. It attempts to get junior high and high school students interested in careers in aeronautics.

Kevin Smith of Bangor loves the Young Eagle program. "I've never really gotten the math part except when Nick teaches me to do things where you finally realize, 'Whoa--I might need this It's just great!'"

The Thunderbirds will perform the weekend of August 25-26 at the Brunswick Naval Air Station.
