BRIDGTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Fryeburg Academy's Christina DiPietro is among the state's top skiers -- even though she is legally blind. Christina and her team will be competing at the State Class A Championships at Big Rock in Mars Hill on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Nordic portion of the event is going on in Presque Isle.
"Is as if I see through tubes," Christina told NEWS CENTER. The normal progression of RP is to severely limit one's night vision and then steal their peripheral sight. In extreme cases, RP can cause total blindness.
This is an endgame Christina is fighting by living a healthy lifestyle, "I also eat healthy and try to minimize my headaches as much as possible because the more headaches I have the worse I can see."
In the final regular season meet, Christina skied in the afternoon while the rest of the field went at night. She won the Giant Slalom for her fourth victory of the year. Her lowest finish of the year has been fourth.
