FALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Christmas bird count is now going on. Birds are being counted in 23 circles around the state of Maine.

If you'd like to know more about the birds around you, winter is a good time to begin.

Luke Seitz' backyard is a pretty good place to learn about birds. The 16-year-old Falmouth High senior has been national junior birder of the year and national runner up twice.

Luke does more than just identifying and studying birds, he paints them. He provided the artwork for birds of the Maine backyard, a pocket guide to identifying the 75 birds most likely to arrive at your bird feeder.

Bird watching is intriguing. A simple pleasure. With a little patience and a little knowledge it can be a wonderful way to help pass a long, cold Maine winter.
