(NEWS CENTER) - 20% of car crashes in Maine are winter-related... and there are more crashes in December than any other month.

Although December generally has fewer snow storms than other winter months, experts agree that drivers are just getting used to winter conditions.

Pat Moody from AAA has some tips for driving in the winter time:

  • Keep your hands at 8 and 4 on the steering wheel.
  • Don't use cruise control
  • Be a smooth driver
  • If you go into a skid, steer in the direction you want to go
  • Increase your following distance
  • Search further down the road
  • Avoid distractions
  • Be prepared for a crash
